Brexit: A future history

Image
Often people comment that "of course I knew that would happen", and as they say hindsight is 20/20 so I've decided to write a future history of Britain. Obviously I'm aware like all chaotic systems like the weather there is certainly no true prediction however I've made references to events and cross-linked where possible. What is this based on? I've experienced things from lots of perspectives. I've come out pretty much unqualified directly into working in a factory at 18, I've self taught, I've worked in the public and private section including local government and the Welsh Assembly Government. I've been through numerous public sector and private sector restructures and seen the effects they have on moral and people. And as an analogy Britain is an organization, and we are all it's employees and Brexit is nothing more than a management restructure on a national or international scale. So you're a remoaner then? Since the r...

Renovating a house - part 3

Image
One of the decisions to make on windows was "are they really that bad?" but I decided to replace all of the windows at the same time for several reasons but mostly because they would all be and look the same. Also for the cost of replacing all windows and doors in the house to A rated makes a massive visual improvement and all completed for less that £10,000. Existing door, windows and dwarf walls Much bigger I had quotes from local company Tropiglaze , from Everest and from my builder as part of the complete job. Everest were evasive about pricing and kept belittling other companies and the builder never bothered to get the quote done. Tropiglaze were excellent, professional and got the quote back in a week, and would have started work in 6 weeks if I hadn't been waiting for 6 weeks that I was waiting for the non-existant builders quote. Removing hideous old windows I have to say Tropiglaze (based in Witney) are serious operators, they turn u...

Renovating a house - part 2 (fencing)

Image
The next problem is the fence which is pretty knackered and at various heights as they've tried to avoid the original wall. I was recommended Trentwood Fencing So we've removed the old wall that was there prior to the fencing company coming. As I've paid for the new fence the neighbour has kindly helped remove the wall and has agreed to dispose of the remains. Ready to go... This is the new gate which is a miracle they've managed to make it look so good considering the odd angle and lack of space. It's better as they've put a post against the wall and then hung it from that side rather than previously handing from the fence. The most boring job in the world.

Windows virtual machines display Black Screen after booting up in VMware ESXi or VMware workstations

Image
If you're having problems that when you boot up a VMware virtual machine (in this case in VMware Workstation) and find that the machine seems to boot up but the screen is black and doesn't respond to any commands you can try the following Firstly try to disable the "Accelerate 3D graphics" option If this doesn't solve the problem you can also change the hardware compatibility, this can certainly help if you're using an updated version of VMware version and you've migrated the virtual machine from an older version.

Renovating a house - part 1

Image
So I've taken on the project of renovating a 1930's house. I've learned a few things so far The first being do not try and get a single building company to do all of the work. They're too slow and it takes weeks for a quotation to be completed and then there is just not enough detail to know exactly what you're getting. Go to the separate trades such as window companies, plumbers, bathroom fitters and get at least 6 of them to come and visit, because chances are two won't turn up, one will be  incompetent and that leaves you with three quotes to compare. Job 1: Get a plumber to replace the boiler and move a radiator The existing Vailant boiler was decades old and though still working well it's a risk to keep it and also run a shower that isn't a powershower in the new bathroom. I spoke to a few plumbers who were all pretty good but went with Jon from Plumbbob as they were ontop of the quote, decent value and confident with what was needed....

Builders to blame for all problems in Britain

Image
In a shock overnight discovery it has now been unveiled that builders are responsible for all of the problems in Britain, and the b uilde r exit (or BREXIT) is the only solution to make Britain Great again. According the Mail and the Guardian builders are STEALING between £2billion and £8billion a year in taxes from hard working Brits. Money that could be spent on saving our NHS. http://www.theguardian.com/politics/reality-check/2012/jul/24/tax-taxavoidance http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2623896/80-admit-pay-workmen-cash-hand-Failure-tradesmen-declare-earnings-said-cost-economy-2bn-year.html When asked what she thought about the NHS being under attack by rich tax dodging builders the nurse broke down in tears and said she'd just worked 48 hours straight and couldn't cope with a political discussion. When Jim "the lad" from Builders Inc was asked about the theft from hard working Brits he simple said "F@~! off" . He pointed...

What's your problem with the EU referendum...?

Image
So I have several problems with the EU referendum, the first being that it's exceptionally complicated and entrusted a decision like this to the general public seems ridiculous. I'm not entirely sure whether I think we should stay in the EU or not, however the amount of rubbish printed on the internet is quite annoying and misleading. I've decided to start writing down my thoughts on it all. Cost of EU membership 2015 Membership cost - £17.8 billion Membership cost (after rebate) - £12.9 billion Money coming back to Britain - £6 billion a year Difference in 2015 - ~£6.9billion Reference: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/eureferendum/12176663/EU-Facts-how-much-does-Britain-pay-to-the-EU-budget.html It's still a lot of money however the benefits of the EU are debatable, compare this with obesity something within our power to control now cost ~6.3billion in direct NHS costs Reference:  http://www.noo.org.uk/LA/impact/economic This could be as much...
